“Het Eilandje”
Just north of the red light district is the old port area of ‘Het Eilandje’, which has now become a trendy quarter where a mixture of the old and the new pleasantly surprise both younger and older visitors. A spectacular process of urban renewal has turned the once faded port district into a lovely neighbourhood with water, promenades, terraces, greenery and some cultural gems.

Take a walk through the pleasant oasis of ‘Het Eilandje’. Among the historical warehouses you will discover the modern architecture of the MAS, the Red Star Line Museum and the new Port House.
Allow yourself to be flabbergasted by the metamorphosis that the Cadix district is now going through.
This lively 19th century district declined in the 1960s. However, new buildings are now emerging at an incredible rate (hospitals, schools, student rooms, residential areas, etc.) and bridges and squares are being constructed. A true voyage of discovery!
