St. Paul’s Church

This ‘baroque jewel in a Gothic shrine’ stands just a stone’s throw away from the river Scheldt. The former Dominican monastery church, consecrated in 1571, is a true feast for the eyes, containing magnificent baroque altars, sublime woodwork, the dazzling organ and more than 200 statues.

Moreover, there are over 50 paintings, including the series of the 15 Mysteries of the Rosary, with work by Jordaens, Rubens, Teniers, Van Balen, Van Dyck and others. These splendid paintings are still hung in the very spots for which they were designed 400 years ago. They give St. Paul’s Church its unique character. Do not forget to visit the impressive Calvary Garden, The New Jerusalem, which looks very much like an 18th century film set.
