Jan Davidsz. de Heem is a remarkable artist in his time, working in the Netherlands, a divided region since the Fall of Antwerp in 1585.
As a painter he worked across national boundaries to elevate the beauty of still life painting to its zenith, insisting on high quality, continually pursuing renewal and maintaining the vitality of the genre.
Dr Fred G. Meijer is curator of this exhibition.

De Heem – Snijders
The Snyders House forms part of the Snyders&Rockox House museum in Antwerp. It is the former residence of Frans Snyders, the Antwerp painter of still lifes, animal pieces and market and hunting scenes. This seventeenth century patrician house is the obvious venue for an exhibition of masterpieces from De Heem’s oeuvre.
De Heem lived in Antwerp for a substantial part of his life. Snyders’ art of observation and his ability to paint with the greatest possible realism, together with his talent for creating order among a plethora of objects, certainly made an impression on De Heem. In some of De Heem’s compositions we can recognise the spatial dynamism that Snyders created in his paintings. De Heem used this technique to shape his own showpiece still lifes, which still come across to us as monumental or even theatrical today.
The subjects of these paintings are expensive, rare but also respectable objects, which have been painted by De Heem in very tactile ways. Glittering with gold, silver, vermeil and mother-of-pearl, they are a joy to behold: a remarkable experience.
