From June 21st 2024 until November 3rd 2024

Some 125 years ago, the ship Belgica sets off from Antwerp, under a bright sun. The expedition heads for the sixth continent, Antarctica. The world maps at the time are almost completed, but Antarctica is still uncharted territory. The international, but very young crew led by Adrien de Gerlache, will become the first to spend an unplanned winter in the Antarctic. When the polar winter sets in, the ship gets stuck in the pack ice.

A guide takes you on an adventure. You set off with the famous research ship Belgica from Antwerp. The expedition heads for the sixth and still unknown continent, Antarctica. The international but very young crew, led by Adrien de Gerlache, will become the first to spend an unplanned winter in the Antarctic. When the polar winter sets in, the ship gets stuck in the pack ice.

In the second part of the expo, you and the guide also reflect on that beautiful area today, where global warming is very much felt.

  • An adventurous voyage comes back to life 125 years later.
  • Unique pieces from the MAS collection, such as the ship’s steering wheel and crow’s nest, sledges and clothing, ice saws and the barrel organ. Supplemented by many beautiful old photos and the crew’s diaries.
  • The expo also shows how the breathtakingly beautiful Antarctic is today: contemporary scientific research, global warming, territorial and economic claims, international collaborations and treaties.
