V-weapons on Antwerp

On Friday 13 October 1944, the first V-rocket struck Antwerp, in Schildersstraat close to the Royal Museum of Fine Arts. Over 40 houses were destroyed and 32 people were killed. This bomb was the first of many.

Antwerp had already been liberated, but, all in all, 857 V-weapons struck Greater Antwerp and 1,327 struck the district of Antwerp before the end of March 1945. Towards the end of the Second World War, Antwerp became the most important target for the German V-weapons because of the importance of its harbour. The people of Antwerp paid a heavy toll: 4,500 casualties, 7,000 injured and 50,000 houses destroyed.
Monuments, commemorative plaques and visual remnants still testify to these sad times, which your city guide will gladly evoke for you.
