War reporter, influential portrait photographer and inspiring surrealist: American Lee Miller (1907-1977) knew many lives. Her diverse, layered and often personal work was published in famous lifestyle magazines such as Vogue and Harper’s Bazaar. Discover her surrealist fashion photographs and poignant war images during an interactive tour with a FOMU guide.

FOMU presents the pioneering work of American Lee Miller (1907-1977) in the exhibition Lee Miller in Print. A female photographer, model, muse, surrealist, war reporter and cook, she had a range of roles in her life.

Miller’s work, which includes alluring fashion photographs, surrealist experiments and poignant war reporting, was as multifaceted as she was. From her time in Paris, where she alternated fashion assignments with photographic experimentation, to establishing her own photography studio in New York, where she employed experimental photographic techniques in her portraits. During World War II, she documented the destruction of London, making penetrating reports and capturing shocking images of the liberation. Her talents extended beyond the camera; she was also a surrealist chef who approached the culinary world in her own unique way.

With more than 200 photographs, journals and archival documents, this exhibition offers a new perspective on Lee Miller’s life and work. On a tour with a FOMU guide, you’ll gain insight into the purpose and distribution of her work, and dive deeper into the evolution of the photographic medium in the 20th century.
